Today I am going to show you a technique that I love and use in my music frequently: thumb slapping. The sound that is created with this technique is similar to a snare drum.

Basically, you are going to slap the side of your thumb on the strings. You should be aiming for the low ‘E’ string or ‘A’ string. The slapping movement is all done with the wrist, don’t bring your hand away from the strings. All you need to do is rotate your wrist, twist it on an axis by turning your wrist back and forth.

While doing this technique, keep your hand as close as possible to the guitar since you’ll want your fingers to be able to directly address the strings as soon as possible.

So let’s start with an easy exercise on the low ‘E’, ‘A’ and ‘D’ strings. Fret the note on the 3rd fret of the low ‘E’ string, play it once with your thumb and then hit the snare. Do the same on the ‘A’ and ‘D’ strings to get a feeling of plucking different string followed by a snare hit. To mute the strings, lightly rest the top or lower part of your finger on the strings that you don’t want to ring.

Next, play the same exercise but pick the string with your index finger instead of using the thumb.

For this exercise, we will play A minor, C, G and D major arpeggiated followed by a snare hit.

Pick the ‘A’, ‘D’, ‘G’ and ‘B’ strings for the A minor and C chord, ‘E’, ‘D’, ‘G’ and ‘B’ strings for the G chord, and ‘D’, ‘G’, ‘B’ and high ‘E’ string for the D chord. Don’t forget to play the snare hit after each arpeggio.

Now it’ll get difficult since we’ll continue picking after snare hits. We’ll keep the same chords, but we’ll add an index, middle and index finger picking pattern after each snare hit.

Finally, let’s play a nice little off-beat riff with the same chords from the previous exercise. Play the root note of the chord on ‘1’ and ‘3’, the snare hit on ‘2’ and ‘4’ and pick the rest of the chord with your index, middle and ring finger on the off-beats.
